I had always heard about Saitama, but never had the chance to visit this prefecture until now. Since we were passing through the area on our way from Chiba to Nikko, we decided to take the opportunity for a one-day trip and explore a little of what it has to offer. This Saitama travel guide shares our experience exploring the prefecture for the very first time.
What is Saitama, Japan known for?
Saitama is best known as a convenient and easily accessible region just north of Tokyo, making it a popular day-trip destination for both locals and visitors. One of its most famous attractions is Kawagoe, often called “Little Edo”, where traditional warehouse-style buildings and nostalgic streets offer a glimpse into Japan’s Edo-period atmosphere. The area is also home to cultural highlights such as the iconic Toki no Kane and the interactive Railway Museum, which is especially popular among train enthusiasts.
Beyond its historical charm, Saitama is also known for its natural scenery and seasonal attractions. Regions like Chichibu offer beautiful mountain landscapes, hiking trails, and vibrant seasonal views such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage. The prefecture also hosts lively cultural events, including the famous Chichibu Night Festival, known for its illuminated floats and fireworks. With its mix of tradition, nature, and accessibility, Saitama offers a more relaxed and less crowded alternative to Tokyo while still delivering rich cultural experiences.

One of its most iconic landmarks is the Toki no Kane, a wooden bell tower that still rings throughout the day, symbolising the town’s long-standing heritage.
Beyond its historic charm, Kawagoe offers a vibrant mix of culture, food, and shopping that makes it a popular day-trip destination from Tokyo. The town is especially well-loved for its local street food, seasonal festivals, and relaxing walking streets that are perfect for slow exploration.

Kashiya Yokocho
Kashiya Yokocho, also known as “Candy Alley”, is one of the most charming and nostalgic streets in Kawagoe. Lined with traditional sweet shops and retro-style storefronts, this narrow alley is famous for its old-fashioned Japanese candies, handmade snacks, and childhood treats that bring a sense of nostalgia to visitors of all ages. The atmosphere is lively yet quaint, with the aroma of freshly made sweets filling the air as you stroll through the cobblestone-like streets.
Beyond its charming vibe, Kashiya Yokocho is also a great place to experience local culture and taste unique regional snacks such as sweet potato treats, rice crackers, and traditional wagashi. Each shop offers something different, many of which have been run by local families for generations. Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is a historic shrine located in Kawagoe, with a history dating back over 1,500 years. It is especially known as a spiritual spot for love, relationships, and family harmony, as it enshrines deities believed to bring blessings for matchmaking and strong bonds. Surrounded by lush greenery and set near the Iruma River, the shrine offers a peaceful and calming atmosphere, making it a popular place for both worship and quiet reflection.
One of the highlights of Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is its charming and photogenic features, such as the tunnel of wooden ema plaques filled with wishes and prayers, as well as the unique “tai-mikuji” fortune slips that visitors can fish out with a rod. The shrine is also beautifully decorated during seasonal events, especially in summer when colourful wind chimes line the pathways, creating a magical and serene ambience. Combining tradition, culture, and visual charm, it remains one of Kawagoe’s most beloved attractions.

Honestly, it was a peaceful and relaxing day trip to Saitama. Since we were travelling with a one-year-old toddler, we didn't plan a packed itinerary. Instead, we kept things flexible and easy-going, allowing us to enjoy the day at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed or exhausted.
