Although I’ve been to Japan multiple times, this is my first visit to Tochigi Prefecture. During my last trip to Europe, a random uncle told me he had been to Nikko and absolutely loved it. He said it was beautiful and that I should visit someday. Well… I finally did! Check out this Tochigi Travel Guide to find out what we got up to in Tochigi, the famous Nikko foods, and more!
What is Tochigi, Japan known for?
Although I’ve visited Japan multiple times, Tochigi Prefecture was completely new to me and what a gem! This region is best known for Nikko, home to UNESCO World Heritage sites like Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and the iconic Shinkyo Bridge. Beyond the temples, Nikko’s natural beauty is breathtaking, with Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and the surrounding mountains perfect for hiking or simply soaking in the scenery. Tochigi also boasts relaxing onsen resorts in Nikko and Nasu, making it an ideal destination for both culture and comfort.
Tochigi isn’t just about sights, it’s a treat for food lovers too! The region is famous for yuba (tofu skin), fresh strawberries during the winter months, and unique local sweets. If you wander outside Nikko, charming Edo-period towns like Kanuma and Oyama showcase traditional architecture and festivals that give a glimpse of Japan’s rich history. Add in seasonal outdoor activities like skiing in Nasu or hiking through the highlands, and Tochigi truly offers the perfect mix of nature, culture, and culinary delights.
Attractions
Kirifuri Plateau
Nestled just a short drive from Nikko, Kirifuri Plateau (日光市霧降高原キスゲ平園地) is a hidden gem in Tochigi that feels like stepping into another world.
Famous for its breathtaking panoramic views and vibrant seasonal landscapes, the plateau offers a serene escape from the usual tourist spots.
In spring and summer, the meadows burst into shades of green, dotted with wildflowers swaying in the gentle breeze. Come autumn, the entire plateau transforms into a golden and crimson wonderland, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.
But Kirifuri Plateau isn’t just about the views; it’s an experience for the senses. The crisp mountain air, the soft sound of rustling grasses, and the quiet trails make it perfect for a peaceful hike or a leisurely picnic
Whether you’re chasing seasonal colours, looking for a quiet retreat, or simply craving fresh air and open skies, Kirifuri Plateau is a must-visit spot that showcases Tochigi’s natural charm in all its glory.
We’re delighted that Sachiko is having such a wonderful time here, especially experiencing her first snowfall, it’s truly a touching moment.

Nikko Toshogu
If you’re visiting Tochigi, Nikko Toshogu (日光東照宮) is an absolute must-see. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Japan’s most ornate and historically significant shrines, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Walking through the intricately carved gates and vibrant buildings feels like stepping back in time. Every detail, from the famous Three Wise Monkeys carving to the lavish gold leaf decorations, showcases the incredible craftsmanship of the Edo period. Surrounded by towering cedar trees, the shrine complex feels both majestic and serene, a perfect blend of history and nature.
Beyond the architecture, Nikko Toshogu offers a truly immersive experience. Stroll along the peaceful paths, enjoy the seasonal colours that paint the landscape, and take a moment to soak in the calm atmosphere. The nearby Shinkyo Bridge and other historic sites make the area perfect for a full day of exploration.
Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking for a cultural escape, Nikko Toshogu is a highlight of Tochigi that leaves a lasting impression.

Kegon Falls
One of the most iconic natural spots in Tochigi Prefecture, Kegon Falls (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki) is truly a sight you won’t forget. Located near Lake Chuzenji, this stunning waterfall drops nearly 100 meters down a rugged cliff, creating a powerful and mesmerising view.
Whether you’re visiting in autumn with fiery red leaves framing the falls or in winter when parts of it freeze into a magical icy sculpture, Kegon Falls shows a completely different charm each season. It’s no surprise that it’s considered one of Japan’s most beautiful waterfalls.
What makes Kegon Falls even more special is the experience itself. You can admire it from the free observation deck above, or take an elevator down to get up close and really feel the mist and power of the cascading water.
The sound of the rushing falls combined with the cool mountain air makes it incredibly refreshing, especially after a day of exploring Nikko. Whether you’re chasing scenic views, seasonal vibes, or just a peaceful moment in nature, Kegon Falls is definitely one of those places that makes you pause and take it all in.

Food
Nikko Maruhide
Tucked away in the charming streets of Nikko, Nikko Maruhide (日光まるひで食堂本店) is one of those local spots you’ll be glad you stumbled upon. Known for its cosy atmosphere and comforting Japanese dishes, this restaurant offers a more laid-back dining experience compared to the busy tourist areas. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, enjoy a warm meal, and take a break after exploring the historical sites around Nikko. Their baby high chair is so cute, it even has a name, haha!
One of the highlights here is their simple yet satisfying menu, featuring local flavours that reflect the region’s specialities. From hearty set meals to dishes made with fresh ingredients, every bite feels homely and authentic.
Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner, Nikko Maruhide is a great spot to recharge and enjoy a taste of Tochigi’s local food scene in a comfortable, welcoming setting.
When visiting Nikko, trying yuba (tofu skin) is a must, as it is one of the region’s most iconic local delicacies with deep cultural roots. Made from the delicate layer that forms on the surface of heated soy milk, yuba has a soft, silky texture and a subtle, nutty flavour that reflects the simplicity and refinement of traditional Japanese cuisine. In Nikko, it is enjoyed in various forms—served fresh, in soups, or paired with rice, offering a unique and wholesome dining experience.
I also loved the clear soup and the vegetable-filled rice, so delicious!

Nikko Pudding Tei
Nikko Pudding Tei (日光ぷりん亭) is a well-known pudding specialty shop that offers a delightful range of creamy custard desserts, beautifully packaged and perfect as both a treat and souvenir. The branch I visited at JR Utsunomiya Station was especially convenient for travellers, making it an ideal quick stop to enjoy a sweet dessert while on the go. Their signature puddings are rich, smooth, and come in various flavours, often served in cute bottles that add to the overall charm of the experience.
The JR Utsunomiya Station outlet also provides a great introduction to the brand’s popular offerings, including seasonal and classic pudding varieties. Despite being located inside a busy station, the shop maintains a welcoming and efficient service, allowing customers to easily pick up desserts without a long wait. It is a perfect spot for anyone looking to enjoy a taste of Nikko’s famous pudding while travelling through Utsunomiya.

Nihonbashi Karari
Nihonbashi Karari (日本橋 からり) is a popular and cost-effective tempura restaurant chain in Japan, known for serving freshly fried tempura at affordable prices in a casual, self-service style setting.
The menu typically features a variety of tempura items such as prawns, vegetables, and seasonal ingredients, all lightly battered and fried to achieve a crisp texture while maintaining the natural flavours of the ingredients. It is especially well-loved for offering a quick yet satisfying dining experience without compromising on taste and quality.
My husband ordered the tendon (tempura rice bowl), which features rice topped with freshly fried tempura and a savory-sweet soy-based sauce.
I opted for the tempura set (teishoku), served with rice, miso soup, and pickles, and featuring an assortment of seafood (prawns and white fish) and vegetables.
