After Botswana, our African adventure continued to Zambia. Although we only had a short amount of time here, just half a day, there was one incredible reason for the visit - Victoria Falls. Located along the mighty Zambezi River, Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders and one of those places I had always wanted to see with my own eyes. With such limited time, we focused mainly on exploring the falls from the Zambian side and taking in its sheer power and beauty. It was a short stop, but definitely one of the most memorable highlights of our journey through Southern Africa.

Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke That Thunders” lies on the Zambezi River along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Stretching for nearly 2 kilometres and dropping about 108 metres, it is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders.
On the Zambian side, the falls are accessed from Livingstone, where you can explore Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, walk along the Knife-Edge Bridge and enjoy dramatic, close-up views of the Eastern Cataract.
The main difference between the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides is the perspective. Zimbabwe generally offers the wider, more panoramic view, with a longer rainforest trail and numerous viewpoints facing the main curtain of the Falls. It is often the better choice if this is your first visit and you want those classic, sweeping Victoria Falls photographs. Zambia, meanwhile, offers a closer and more immersive experience, particularly around the Eastern Cataract and Knife-Edge Bridge.
We were so lucky that day because we got to see a double rainbow almost the entire time! 🌈🌈
Zambia is also famous for experiences that you cannot have from the Zimbabwe side, particularly Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool, a natural rock pool right on the edge of the Falls. Devil’s Pool is only accessible during suitable low-water conditions and must be visited with a guide. So, if you have enough time, visiting both sides is ideal: choose Zimbabwe for the grand, panoramic views and Zambia for the closer, more adventurous perspective. Together, they offer two very different ways to experience the same incredible waterfall.
Overall, I personally feel that one day in Zambia is definitely not enough! I really wish we had more time to explore this beautiful country and discover more of what it has to offer. Unfortunately, our time in Zambia was limited as we had to save more days for South Africa. But hey, I guess that just gives me another reason to come back someday!
