About North Macedonia
North Macedonia is a fascinating country in the heart of the Balkans, known for its rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It offers an intriguing mix of Eastern and Western influences, shaped by centuries of Roman, Ottoman, and Byzantine rule. Skopje's capital city is full of contrasts — from ancient stone bridges and old bazaars to grand modern monuments and quirky architecture. Beyond the city, the country boasts stunning landscapes, including tranquil lakes, rolling mountains, and charming villages.
Skopje
Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is a city of contrasts, where ancient history meets bold modernism. Divided by the Vardar River, the town connects its Ottoman-influenced Old Bazaar with the neoclassical-style buildings and statues of the newer city centre via the iconic Stone Bridge. Skopje is famous for its ambitious urban makeover known as "Skopje 2014," which introduced grand monuments, massive statues (including one of Alexander the Great), and government buildings in a neoclassical style. Despite its quirky charm, the city retains deep cultural roots.
Attractions
Macedonia Square
Macedonia Square is the heart and soul of Skopje — the largest and most iconic public square in North Macedonia. Surrounded by grand neoclassical buildings and lively cafes, the square is best known for its towering monument of Alexander the Great (officially named "Warrior on a Horse"), which stands proudly at its centre.
This vibrant hub is a popular gathering place for both locals and tourists, offering a perfect starting point to explore the city. From here, you can easily walk to the Stone Bridge, the Old Bazaar, and other landmarks. With its mix of modern flair and historical references, Macedonia Square captures the essence of Skopje’s evolving identity and bold urban character.

The Stone Bridge is one of Skopje’s most iconic landmarks, connecting the city’s modern Macedonia Square with the historic Old Bazaar. Spanning the Vardar River, this centuries-old bridge dates back to the 15th century and was built during the Ottoman era. With its sturdy stone arches and timeless design, the bridge has witnessed much of the city’s history and transformation. Walking across it feels like a symbolic journey between Skopje’s past and present. It's not only a functional pathway but also a beautiful spot to pause, enjoy river views, and admire the surrounding architecture.
The Mother Teresa Memorial House in Skopje is a touching tribute to one of the world’s most beloved humanitarians, who was born in this city in 1910. Built on the site of the former Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, where she was baptised, the modern, glass-and-steel structure contrasts with the surrounding architecture, making it a striking landmark.
Inside, the museum showcases photographs, personal items, handwritten letters, and other memorabilia that chronicle her life, faith, and global mission of compassion. A small chapel on the upper floor invites quiet reflection, while the exhibits offer a deeper insight into Mother Teresa's humble beginnings and extraordinary legacy of service.

The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating, with a beautiful terrace that provides great views of the square and its bustling atmosphere, perfect for people-watching or enjoying the city lights in the evening.
I really enjoyed the appetisers — there was a good variety, and everything was delicious. For the main course, the sausage casing was a bit tough for my liking, but the overall flavour was quite good. I loved the dessert! I believe it was an apple pie with cinnamon, served with vanilla ice cream. Yum! Since it was Easter Day, each of us also received an egg, which was such a cute touch!

Restaurant Belvedere
Restaurant Belvedere, located in the heart of Ohrid, North Macedonia, is a well-known dining spot that beautifully combines traditional Macedonian hospitality with a cosy, elegant atmosphere. Just a short stroll from the lake and the city’s main attractions, the restaurant is a favourite among both tourists and locals.
Housed in a charming building with a warm interior and classical décor, Belvedere offers indoor and outdoor seating, with the terrace providing lovely views during warmer months.
As soon as we were seated, a variety of toppings were served to accompany the bread. I tried them all — my favourite was the garlic aioli, which was wonderfully garlicky!
For the main course, I had grilled chicken breast served with fries and a side of vegetables. The dessert was baklava, which I found a bit too sweet for my taste.
