Mizuki Shigeru Road

Home town of the manga artist of its namesake, Sakaiminato’s Mizuki Shigeru Road is a popular destination for children and adults alike. The road, extending from Sakaiminato Station into the city proper, is an 800-meter-long arcade with some 153 bronze statues of Mizuki’s fantasy creatures on display, including details on each character. Stopping for a close look at each of these could take all day!

A stroll along the road at night, when all the statues are lit up, is an altogether different delight. From the healing Kappa Spring to the Yokai Jinja, a sort of fantasy shrine at which fortune slips can be drawn, to the Yokai Post, where mail with the ‘fairy postmark’ gets delivered, Mizuki Shigeru Road will surround you with bizarre creatures.

Tons of Kitaro goods can only be bought at the shops on Mizuki Shigeru Road! The shops are full of eats like Kitaro bread and creature-shaped cakes. You might become a ‘creature connoisseur’ here too!

These are something that you won't see so often in normal days. The photo that I had shown were pink soy sauce, pink wasabi, and pink curry. Weird right? Why the Japanese always so creative. Lol

With no middleman, this is a great chance to buy a multitude of varieties cheaply and fresh. If you’re hungry, there’s plenty to eat! The Minato-ten restaurant is not to be missed! Large bus parking space for 20 vehicles.

Yumeminato Tower

Yumeminato Tower and Yumeminato Park are both on the south side of Sakaiminato's Takenouchidanchi, where the San' in Yumeminato Fair was held. Yumeminato is well known as Sakaiminato City's main park, offering a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan and Mt Daisen. At the park's centre, Yumeminato Tower is a 45-meter-tall structure with a viewing platform. The area provides souvenirs and local Tottori specialities as well as opportunities to try on ethnic costumes from Mongolia, Korea, China, and Russia for free for a cultural experience, the whole family can enjoy.

I also got a certificate to prove that I have been to the lowest tower in Japan! Hahaha. Normally, people will show off that he/she has been to somewhere tallest. Well, I'm the special one I guess.

On the tower's fourth floor is the scenic Tower Cafe, offering an outstanding view of the landscape from its bright, spacious interior, making it an excellent place to relax. Next door to the tower is Minato Onsen Honokami, with its rotemburo from which Mt Daisen and the Sea of Japan can be seen, and a most excellent family bathing area. A sauna is also available.

Morinokuni

The name of Mori-no-Kuni means “Kingdom of the forest”. They have large nature parks, playgrounds field athletics, dog-run, 30 nature activities, and more than 80 campgrounds. All are for kids and adults. Some activities required a reservation, so do call for booking first. There are some guides who can speak in English so no worries about the communication barrier.

There are so many activities you can do such as athlete park, playground, campground, dog run, nature tours, crafts, outdoor cooking, harvesting and so on. There are some games which allow kids who are 3 years old and above to play but we found it a little bit difficult even we're adults. Lol

After exercise, BBQ grills are always the best choice because we are so hungry! They served varieties of vegetables, beef and chicken meats. Since I don't eat beef, so my portion was just purely chicken and vegetables.

Mount Daisen

Mount Daisen is a large, volcanic mountain that rises up from sea level to dominate the terrain of western Tottori Prefecture. Part of Daisen-Oki National Park, the 1729 meter high mountain is the tallest in the Chugoku Region and is included on the list of Japan's 100 famous mountains. Daisen has not erupted for several thousand years.

Around late October and early November, the maple and beech forests that cover the mountain slopes turn brilliant shades of autumn colours. One of the best places to view the leaves is from a parking lot at Kagikake-toge Pass south of the mountain (not reachable by public transportation).

When we had arrived, we saw a goat is eating the grass. Her name was Hana which means "flower". So kawaii~ She just ignore us while we keep taking photos of her and simply enjoy eating the grass.

If you pay a visit here, don't forget to try the Milk no Sato's expensive dairy ranch at the foot of Mt. Daisen. It was soft-serve ice cream on top with yoghurt at the bottom. Super yummy!

Oe No Sato Coco Garden

In 2008, Coco Garden (大江ノ郷自然牧場) was born as a "Tamago specialty store"  that sells freshly born "Tenmi eggs" and sweets made with Tenmi eggs. They use only carefully selected ingredients such as Tenmi egg, milk and butter, and other ingredients from Tottori prefecture, as well as Hokkaido cream cheese and domestic flour to make sweets. Coco Garden, which has the meaning of "cocco (chicken)" garden, was named after the store where customers can feel the warmth as if it were a garden where they could freely spend their time.

Oe no Sato Baumkuchen

Moist and rich authentic Baumkuchen made with time and effort. It is also used for celebrations such as marriage and childbirth.

The patisseries patiently teach us step-by-step how to make a perfect Baumkuchen and I have to tell you, it's not easy at all! However, eventually, we are satisfied with the outcome and our hard work paid off!

Don't forget to go to the first floor to try their pancakes! It was the BEST pancake that I ever ate! The expiry date is only 10 minutes.

Scarlet maple syrup and butter that seems to be slippery on hot pancakes baked in fox. The moment of putting a knife into a plump dough is the most luxurious. The pancakes they make can only be eaten here.

Normally, I can't finish even just 1 pancake, but this one, I can eat up to 2 and I still craving for more.

As you see the sign past the railroad crossing, go straight along the prefectural road No.32 toward Kawara, cross the "Funaoka Ohashi", and you will see the road sign "Oe" on the lane of about 200 meters. Tottori Sand Museum

Nature created the "Tottori Sand Dunes," a formative beauty created over the years. They want to create an unprecedented creative man-made beauty here and to excite and impress people who visit this site. This desire came to life as the Tottori Sand Museum which opened at the Tottori Sand Dunes on November 18, 2006.

The museum is Japan's only open-air museum exhibiting sculptures made of "sand." Katsuhiko Chaen, who is now active domestically and abroad as a sand sculptor and producer, is attracting attention as one of "100 Japanese individuals the world respects," is the executive producer of the museum.

The highest level of sand sculptures in the world is exhibited every year, inviting sand sculptors from around the world. Sand sculptures eventually collapse as the material is sand. You can see it for a brief time, in that place. The transience is the attraction and beauty of the sand sculpture.

In the past, sand exhibitions were held outdoors and in temporary structures, but in 2012 the sand museum moved into its own permanent building. Exhibitions change annually and last from mid-April to early January of the following year. Every exhibition has its theme, typically a country or region. In 2019, the theme of the exhibition is South Asia. The exhibition lasts from April 13, 2019, to January 5, 2020.

I must say, this sand museum was out of my expectation. Their sand sculpture skills were brilliant and it looks so real! Definitely worth to visit when you're in Tottori.

On the first floor, there was a small shopping area where you can buy some souvenirs. There are some unique souvenirs such as a book of chocolate and other handmade handbags to grab.

Tottori Sand Dunes

The Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘, Tottori Sakyu) are the largest sand dunes in Japan and Tottori's most famous tourist attraction. Located just outside the city centre, they span roughly 16 kilometres of coast along the Sea of Japan and are up to two kilometres wide and 50 meters high. They are part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park.

The sand dunes were created over thousands of years, as sand from the nearby Sendaigawa River was washed out to sea and eventually re-deposited along the coast by the ocean's currents. Today, the constant movement of the tides and the coastal winds continuously shape the sand dunes and provide an ever-changing landscape.

The main sightseeing area spans a half kilometre swath of sand between the visitor centre and the sea. Many of the largest sand dunes are found here, and their tops provide visitors with beautiful views out over the coast. From here you can also explore the vast expanses of sand which lead off for several kilometres in almost every direction.

There are also a number of other attractions to enjoy around the dunes. My first time riding a camel and the experience was so AMAZING! Camel and horse-drawn cart rides travel the dunes, while the more adventurous might try paragliding or sandboarding (a variation of snowboarding) which are offered by local companies. Views over the dunes can be enjoyed from the observation deck of the Sakyu Center, which is connected with the sand dunes by a chair lift.

Uradome Coast Island Cruise

The Uradome Coast is commonly said to be the most beautiful coastline out of the entire Sanin Coast, with beautiful white sand and green pines along a ria coastline that you can enjoy from a distance on a touring boat. These touring boats pass through the tunnel-like Kaishoku Domon that is located on Sengan-Matsushima and in spring you can see the Natane-goto rocks where there are a number of rapeseed blossoms that grow wild, along with a large variety of other little islands along the coast.

There are two types of ships, pleasure cruises, and small boats, both of which require about 40~50 minutes per excursion. The pleasure cruises hold about 95 people and go around the islands at a very leisurely pace allowing you to admire the scenery. The smaller boats only hold 12 people; these small boats are able to go through tiny places that the larger pleasure cruises cannot, and can also go into places where the water depth is shallow. Regardless, please try to check in advance because the ship departures vary depending on weather conditions.

WHAT TO EAT
Nashi Soft Serve | Tottori Hanakairo

Many places in Tottori prefecture also make use of Tottori's locally grown fruits and fresh dairy to create their own unique soft serve ice cream and gelato.

Among them, one that is highly recommended is nashi soft serve, made using Asian pears grown in Tottori. The peculiar sour sweetness of these pears, combined with the sweetness of the soft serve makes for a truly special dessert.

Squid Ink Soft Serve

As I mentioned, the Japanese are always so creative. And sometimes, even the strangest sounding treats can really surprise you with how delicious they are.

You may associate squid ink with Mediterranean food, but it’s very popular in Japan as well. Try some squid ink pasta and then top it off with some squid ink ice cream, but check your teeth before you flash a smile!

Ajiroya

Tottori prefecture is where the fishing ports of Sakai Port and Tottori Port, near central Tottori city, bring Japan's largest caches of the red queen snow crab and maguro tuna ashore. For that reason, many shops in the prefecture can serve fresh seafood at very reasonable prices.

Ajiroya (お食事処 あじろや) serves fresh seafood and it is just located beside the port of Uradome Coast Island Cruise! After finishing the meals, we directly board the cruise, so convenient right? Tried this Kaisen Don at Ajiroya and it was delicious!

Seisuian | Kurayoshi

Seisuian is a restaurant housed in an early Taisho-era townhouse, popular for its mochi-based eats. Its pride is the mochi-shabu-zen, a twist on shabu-shabu with thinly sliced rice cakes in a bonito broth. The presentation is lovely visually, as well as offering a host of delicious tastes including sesame, yuzu citron, sakura shrimp, and mugwort.

The shabu rice cake is their signature dish and it was my first time trying different colours of rice cakes. The flavours include Tochimi, shrimp, mugwort, sesame seeds, eggplant and many more. Besides, it also served with shrimp, red fish, scallops and udon. It cost about 1,650 yen.
