Mount Moiwa Ropeway Sapporo, Hokkaido

MOUNT MOIWA ROPEWAY SAPPORO, HOKKAIDO

Konnichiwa! Finally, I blog about my Hokkaido trip and the first thing that I would like to share with you all is Mount Moiwa Ropeway which is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido. You guys probably saw some of the beautiful scenes of it on my instastories. Today, I would like to share more info and photos of this spectacular place with you. This place is quite a special place for me because I have been here 10 years ago and I'm excited to revisit it after all these years! Continue reading to find out more. (Updates : You may read my Hokkaido travel itinerary here : Winter Wonderland in Hokkaido)

About Mount Moiwa Ropeway

Mount Moiwa (藻岩山, Moiwa-yama) is one of several small, forested mountains southwest of central Sapporo. The mountain is a popular sightseeing spot that is known for the spectacular view out over the city from an observation deck at its summit. The view is especially beautiful after sunset.

The Mount Moiwa Ropeway climbs from the base of the mountain three quarters up the mountain to a transfer station. From there a rather unique mini cable car travels the rest of the way to the upper station at the summit where there are an observation deck and restaurant with nice views out over the city. The station also houses a planetarium. The ropeway and building complex at the summit was reopened in December 2011 after extensive renovations.

If you think this place is only beautiful during the winter season, then you might be wrong. The view here is spectacular even during spring, summer, and autumn too! Take a look at the photo shown above to see how beautiful the landscape is! Since my two visits were during the winter season, I'll definitely revisit again during another season to check out how beautiful they are.

This is the latest kind of ropeway and it celebrates coexistence with nature. It's large glass sides allow passengers to enjoy sweeping views of the virgin forest of Mt.Moiwa as well as the city of Sapporo. The travel time is about 5 minutes.

Be sure to check out the views from both the ropeway and cable car. The landscape is so beautiful just like a winter wonderland!

I still remember me and my younger sister watching Twilight : Breaking Dawn before we got here (10 years back) and we were thinking of this beautiful snow landscape just like those movie scenes!

Mo-risu Cars are also known as mini cable cars designed to allow visitors to experience the surrounding forests. Visitors can take a round trip from Moiwa Mid Station to Moiwa Summit Station. Visitors can enjoy the sensation of swirling through the forest. Travel time for about 2 minutes.

The Beautiful Landscape

Once you get up here, you can check out this beautiful city view! Moiwa Mountain has the Ainu name "Inkarushipe (where the guard is always up there)", is a mountain at an altitude of 531 meters. As the name implies, from the Moiwa summit observation deck, overlooking the Sapporo, it spreads a large panorama of 360 degrees.

If you're visiting this place during winter like I did, be sure to wear a thick coat and hand gloves when you get here because it was so windy!

I managed to take a few photos before I went down to grab a hot choc for myself. The hot beverage is a life saving for me! Lol

Sapporo was selected as one of Japan’s new three most beautiful city night views alongside Nagasaki and Kitakyushu, at the Night View Summit held in October 2018 and attended by local governments and companies dedicated to revitalizing night view tourism across Japan. The peak observatory is the spot for stunning views overlooking the city lights of Sapporo, which appear like sparkling precious stones dotting the Ishikari Plain as far as the eye can see.

From the summit observatory, including the streets of Sapporo, majestic Ishikari Plain and Ishikari Bay are spread, superb view continuing the majestic mountains in the distance. Turn to a romantic night view spot, such as colourful jewellery shining when the sun goes down, often you can revel in the sparkling beauty and Kana Sapporo night view. The best in luxurious moments of excitement from the bottom of my heart is waiting.

Bell of Happiness

The beautiful night view of Mt. Moiwa is a popular dating spot for lovers. There is a legend that love padlocks can be attached to the surrounding handrails, and if you attach two padlocks to the padlock and attach them, the couple will never separate. After ringing the bell of happiness at the summit observatory, write a commemorative message on the key while watching the wonderful scenery, and why not deepen your bond?

Ai padlocks are sold at Moimomo-no-omise at Moiwa Nakabaka Station and at Star Hall at Sancho StationThe felt-tip pens will be rented at the cash register. I wish my hubby was here with me so we can do these romantic things together.

The Jewels

The restaurant at Sancho Station is designed with glass walls, enabling guests to capture panoramic views where you can enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful night view of Sapporo.

The concept of the place is "anniversary restaurant" serving casual French cuisineDinner courses are from 4,800 yen and highly recommended for anniversaries as well as normal dinner. I will definitely ask my husband to bring me here to celebrate our wedding anniversary one day.

Moi Moi no Omise

Meet the kawaii Mo-ris! For your info, Mo-ris is the mascot character of Mt.Moiwa.

Moi moi no omise located on the first-floor at Nakabara Station stocks a wide range of original gifts and souvenirs of Mo-ris and memorable souvenirs of your trip at Mt.Moiwa!

For me, I had bought a few merchandises like souvenirs and reminded myself I have been to this amazing place!

You can also purchase "love padlock" to attach to the fence around the Bell of Happiness at Summit.

Despite having visited this place two times in a row, I promised myself I will revisit this place again, probably with my husband next time.

How to Access
  • By public transport
From Susukino, take Sapporo's only streetcar line to "Ropeway Iriguchi" station (25 minutes, 200 yen, frequent departures). From there, a free shuttle bus operates to the lower ropeway station (departs every 15 minutes). Alternatively, the Mount Moiwa Ropeway can be reached in an eight-minute walk from the Ropeway Iriguchi streetcar stop.
  • By car
The "Kanko Highway" toll road approaches Mount Moiwa from the southwest and leads to a parking lot at the Nakabara. It is open from mid-April to early November between 10:30 and 22:00 (entry until 21:30).

So here's just a sneak preview about the beautiful view in Mt.Moiwa. I will make a Winter Wonderland video and upload it on my IGTV soon. In order to get the latest updates, don't forget to follow me on Instagram.
